AVON VIEW HIGH SCHOOL
This week, March 3-6, is a very important week for students in Grades 10 and 11 as well as Grade 12’s planning to return to Avon View next year. Course registration is underway this week with students making course selections on-line. It is very important that students complete this process as the information is used to determine the courses and number of course selections to be offered. Students have received course registration materials and Student Services has been visiting classrooms and meeting with students to assist in course selection. Students are encouraged to discuss their English and Math selections with their English and Math teachers from this year.
With today’s newsletter each student will receive their first academic updates for this semester. If you have any concerns, please contact the school and speak with the teacher involved. If you want to speak with a teacher in person, it is important to make an appointment. It is impossible for teachers to leave their class to have a conversation. Administrators are also involved in many facets of school life and if you drop into the school you may not be able to speak to one right away. Appointments are always appreciated so you do not have to wait for extended periods of time.

Avon View's Improv Team had a great season. The team held weekly improvised lunches providing food and entertainment for interested spectators. We hosted our own Improv Challenge on February 5th with a staff team and special guest teams from Quick as a Wink and Magic 949 Misfits. All attending had a great time and we look forward to next year's challenge. The team also participated in two mini-tournaments as well as regional competition on February 20th in Halifax. The Grade 12 members: Jake Williams, Scotty Lunn, Jessica Slaunwhite, Megan MacCormack-Mason, Laura Kelly, Celene Andrews, Darrin Carr, and Jasmine Hare will all be missed next year. We wish them the best of luck as they improvise their way through life.
This year's Drama Fest to be held at Dalhousie University April 30th to May 3rd will include five original plays written, directed and acted by members of the Drama 12 Theatre Studies class. Students of any grade are eligible to attend Drama Fest and take in the many workshops and performances. Information is available from Mrs. DesLauriers. First payments are due by March 13th. The countdown is on!
This year Avon View will present the William F. Brown musical "The Wiz" an updated version of the Wizard of Oz. Auditions have already taken place and rehearsals will start in earnest after March Break. Mark the dates on your calendar for May 28, 29, & 30. It's going to be a great show! Anyone interested in helping out contact Mrs. DesLauriers. We're always willing to accept donations as well.
Students from Avon View have been involved in many experiences with performance over the past few months. Students have worked with the African Heritage Society, visited the Elms, attended a Zuppa Circus presentation of "Poor Boy" at Neptune, helped produce the Annual Prom Fashion Show, work-shopped with the PASTE Team at WHMS, created their own collectives, presented dance and drama as a part of the Avon View Course Fair, and much more. Music students have held their annual concert, and performed for the Valentine's Tea and Visual Arts students have been busy creating many various works of art to grace our halls. Just take a look around and you will see that the arts are alive and well at Avon View. Keep your eyes open for up-coming events, the first Dance Performance, a night of Short Plays, the Spring Concert, and other events. It's all well worth the price of admission.
JV Girls Basketball
The JV Girls basketball is nearing the end of a very busy season. The girls advanced to Provincials by defeating a strong Parkview team at the Regional tournament and will be attending the Provincial tournament February 27 and 28 at Horton School. Best of luck to the girls! Grade 11's, who will not be returning to the JV team next season are: Kelsey Dempsey, Laura Haywood, Shauna Huntley, Lauren Edwards, Michelle O'Brien, Sabrina Hiefer, and exchange student Mariela Fernandez. Ms Dill would like to thank the girls for a wonderful season, and parents for continued support and transportation, even when scheduled times were unclear!
Good Luck at Provincial Girls and thanks for a great job!
